The audience are the most important part of the music video process as they are the ones who will be consuming our product which is meant to advertise our song.
My group and I have decided that our target audience is going to be of the ages 16 to 19 and early to mid 20's.
This audience are the most mainstream in the sense that they consume our chosen genre which is R&B as they are the easiest to influence due to the fact that at that early age, especially 16, you are still trying to find yourselves and they tend to aspire to be wealthy and successful in life.
In Maslows hierarchy of needs it states that people look for five simple things; self actualisation; fulfilling your potential, our music video intends on influencing our audience's decision in real life situation such as relationships in a way to guide them to make the decision that's right for them, Esteem; The idea that everyone wants to be respected in order to actually feel good about themselves;this combines with the personality of the person which dictates who confident they are, our music video intends on making our audience, especially the female audience as they are our main priority, feel better about themselves as the lyrics reveal conflict esteem wise but how the main artist over comes it with lyrics such as "I'm just saying you could do better". In addition our genre;R&B; has woman artist who convey themselves in a more inspirational light for young girls and woman such as Beyonce who's persona comes across as strong and independent which is what young girls aspire to be.
Another main aspect of Maslow's theory is the fact that every one wants to be loved and belong to some one or something bigger. This links with this music videos intention of creating some sort of belonging as during this young age every one just wants to fit in and be apart of an ongoing trend. In reference to love, seeing as R&B is based on love, break ups, make ups and sexual relationships this does incorporate with our audience especially our 16 year olds as at this age the legal age of consent when having a relationship of a sexual nature is 16 years old.
The idea of feeling safe plays a huge roll as our song is based on loneliness and emptiness within relationships and breakups.
And last but not least phsycology, that includes the basics such as breathing, eating, sleeping and sex.
This fits in with our music video narrative as when we get down to the basic necessities to live it makes the audience connect with the lyrics and the song on a deeper scale.
The majority of young adults who listen to this genre come from urban, over populated cities which are filled with night clubs which plays this sort of music. In addition when you live in overpopulated circumstances word gets around faster so trends stand out more when it comes to trying to find your self in a place where there are so many different personalities. R&B also became popular in condense cities such as New York which is home to the Harlem Renaissance; not a coincidence as many poets , musicians and singers have flourished in this city.
Our target audience tend to prefer spending their times chilling out with their friends, listening to music, going out and exploring.
Girls of this age range like to keep up with the latest trends in regards to clothes and beauty tips as well as being academic and aspiring to go further in life. They also become more open to the idea of liking someone and having different sexual romantic feelings towards someone else. My target audience tend to have hobbies such as playing an instrument, keeping fit by doing something athletic, reading and exploring new things.
Boys also enjoy hanging out with their friends and catching up on the latest trends; of music and clothing as well as television programmes. They also prefer playing video games more than girls because girls priorities other things more than video games.
Football is also a huge hobby most boys tend to share as an interest as well as other sports such as basketball and cricket.
This target audience tend to live average lives in the sense that they are either in some sort of education or have an occupation.
The 16 to 19 year olds will be consumed with things such as GCSE'S, A levels or apprentischips. The 20 to 25 year olds will be consumed with university and deadlines. Although there is a huge age gap between a 16 and a 25 year old romance has a huge effect on both these age ranges and thats how this genre connects both these generations.
Both these age ranges however all manage to fit music into their daily lives thanks to technical convergence which has allowed us to have the world at our finger tips. Objects such as smart phones which have internet allow us to download apps which we can access for free along with the content it contains including music videos.
The majority of my target audience will come from upper working class to middle class families as this is the average class for my particular audience.
In order to ensure my target audience enjoy the chosen genre I have conducted a number of questionnaires to research deeper into what my target audience listen to.
I used 'Whatsapp' as part one of my research as I can easily manipulate who answers by choosing who to ask out of my audience. The majority of the audience I asked are female but I included males as they will also have listened to the original version of 'Marvins Room' and may take interest in another version with a different perspective the 'female gaze' if you will.
The results were:
The majority of my audience said they appreciated R&B as "the songs are catchy and often relate to peoples real life" issues which is what my group and I considered when we chose our song. Another member also said that "they also usually have a narrative through out the song and the video" this feed back in particular has both reassured and allowed us to go ahead with a more narrative music video rather than performance as our lyrics tell a story of heart break and we felt it our duty to do this song some justice and portray the female side compared to the male side.
